What is a thermoformed mould?
Definition and process
A thermoformed mould is the essential tool in the industrial process of thermoforming. This technique involves heating a sheet or plate of food-grade plastic until it becomes malleable, then shaping it using a specific mould. The mould can be of a positive (convex) or negative (concave) shape and serves as a support for the plastic material to take the desired form via vacuum suction or air pressure.
Once formed, the piece is cooled to permanently set this new shape, thus creating a rigid mould, precise and perfectly adapted to professional production constraints.
Manufacturing and technical performance
The thermoformed mould must possess high thermal conductivity in order to:
- Transmit heat quickly to the plastic material during heating
- Evacuate this heat efficiently during cooling
- Guarantee perfect reproducibility of shapes
At Maé Innovation, we use several cutting-edge manufacturing techniques: high-precision CNC machining, 3D printing for prototypes, and composite material moulding for series. The precision and robustness of our moulds determine the final quality of each thermoformed piece, notably its dimensional precision and reproducibility in intensive production.
The advantages of THERMOMAÉ thermoformed moulds

Advice on using and maintaining your moulds
First use
- Wash the mould with warm soapy water
- Rinse thoroughly and dry
- For chocolate: do not grease the mould (PETG is naturally non-stick)
- For frozen preparations: a light food film can facilitate demoulding
Optimal demoulding
- Chocolate: Place in the refrigerator until fully retracted, turn over, and tap lightly
- Frozen logs: Run the base of the mould under hot water for 5 to 10 seconds, demould immediately
- Entremets: Use the hot water technique or a heat gun on the edges
Maintenance and durability
- Wash with warm soapy water
- Avoid abrasive sponges that would scratch the surface
- Dry completely before storage
- Store flat to avoid any deformation
- Lifespan: several hundred cycles in intensive professional use
FAQ – Frequently asked questions about thermoformed moulds
What is the difference between PETG and APET?
PETG is more rigid and shock-resistant, ideal for repeated intensive use. APET is slightly more flexible but remains very stable, often used for mass production.
Can I use thermoformed moulds in the oven?
No, PETG does not withstand baking. These moulds are designed for no-bake preparations (chocolate, mousses, bavarois, ice creams) or for cold assembly.
How many times can I reuse a thermoformed mould?
In intensive professional use with appropriate maintenance, our moulds can withstand several hundred production cycles without significant alteration.
Are the moulds compatible with deep freezing?
Yes, perfectly. PETG withstands temperatures from -40°C to +80°C without deformation.
Do you offer thermoformed moulds with integrated reliefs?
Yes, we can integrate reliefs, textures, and patterns directly into custom thermoforming. For our standard moulds, we recommend using our compatible silicone décor mats.
