The History of the Hamburger
The origin of the hamburger comes from multiple cultures. Although the United States is now known as the king of beef sandwiches, both the Mongolian people and Germany also contributed to the creation of this tasty dish. It all began in the 13th century. Mongol warriors, spending much of their time on horseback, would store their meat under their saddles, which over time would tenderise and flatten the meat, making it easy to eat raw. Later, around 1600, this idea was brought to Europe, specifically to Hamburg, where minced beef was eaten cooked with onions. This preparation became known outside the city as “Hamburg-style steak“. According to several sources, it was the Americans who had the idea of putting the “Hamburg-style steak” between two pieces of bread to eat it more easily, following the arrival of German immigrants.
